Electric field lines due to dipole
Note that the figure is interactive, mouse drag to rotate and mouse scroll to zoom in/out
Using the simulation above feel the following statements about lines due to dipole
- Lines are parallel to dipole on axial line
- Lines are antiparallel to dipole on equatorial plane
- Dipole is the axis of symmetry of linesL
- All lines originate at positive (red) and terminate at negative (blue)
- The equatorial plane (perpendicular bisector of charges) is zero potential plane since it is equidistant from charges and E is perpendicular tio this plane
- The field is perpendicular to dipole when position vector of point wrt center of charges makes roughly tan-1(root(2) angle with dipole
Electric field at a point due to dipole
Use the following simulator to fell the direction of magnitude at any point due to dipole better. Keep ratio of charges =-1 to make ssytem as dipole.
Drag the point to find electric field vector
